Part of my exploration of visual literacy is looking at how we might teach people to express themselves visually. Part of this is learning how to draw simple objects. This video shows how you can draw a car using very simple shapes.

- Values, motivation and businessI got these questions in an email interview by Garrick Gibson recently, and, since I get asked these things fairly often, I thought I would post my answers here.1) What do you value most about what you are doing in your profession? 2) Name 3 of the most important actions taken to start your business? 3) How much of your personal values played a role in start […]

These tips are great. I once had the temerity to draw an ambulance in a whiteboard workflow session I was doing for an ambulance company… and while if was far from gorgeous, the impact was incredible! i’d love to send a clip of it for your amusement, but I guess ya can’t in a comment…
Dave emailed me the image and here it is:

Like so many intimidations in our lives, drawing seems beyond us. Yet when you have a clear communicator like you who can simplify, then the skill belongs to any of us. Thanks.
Thank you Richard!
Somehow when I was a kid, I missed out on Ed Emberley’s books, but now I’m revisiting them and find them amazingly in tune with the current visual thinking movement:

Thanks Austin!
That was great! Thanks!
I’m not considering myself a stupid person. I hold an advanced engineering degree and deal with complex algorithms on a daily basis.
But visual literacy doesn’t work for me. I just cannot draw anything more complex than a circle or a rectangle, let alone a car.
Maybe it’s a matter of artistic aptitude.
OutputLogic,
Drawings are simply made up of lines. If you can write the letters of the alphabet you have all the motor skills and hand-eye coordination necessary to draw anything your mind can imagine.
It’s simply a matter of taking the time to learn the basic shapes and some principles of construction. I’m not saying it’s easy, any more than it’s easy to learn a new language. But it doesn’t require any special skills beyond the ones you already have.
